THE CHALLENGE

A website as playful and interactive as the event without feeling childish

How do you create something that feels both playful and mature? Phantasia's March 2025 event brings together adults for an evening of interactive art and creativity, but they needed more than a ticket portal. The website had to capture the spirit of creative exploration while clearly signaling this was sophisticated adult play, not a children's party.

Adding to the complexity was the question of audience building: how do we get people excited to attend a new event without established brand recognition? The website needed to intrigue first-time visitors enough to convert their curiosity into attendance, while also serving as a digital extension of the experience for those who couldn't attend in person.

THE PROCESS

Testing the boundaries of sophisticated play

I began by exploring how other creative events balance professionalism with personality. Most fell into two camps: overly corporate or trying too hard to be edgy. Phantasia needed something different.

Through iterative prototyping, I discovered that restraint was key, interactive elements should enhance, not overwhelm. Each feature needed to earn its place by either delighting users or driving them toward ticket purchase.

THE INSIGHT

Interactive code creates experience, not just description

The breakthrough: rather than telling visitors about Phantasia's creative spirit, I could let them experience it through p5.js interactions. By developing seven different sketches that refresh with each visit, the website becomes a living preview of the event itself.

The key was sophisticated restraint, each interactive element needed to delight without feeling juvenile, which I achieved through careful typography pairings and controlled animation parameters.

Visitors don't read about creativity—they experience it instantly through dynamic hero sections that change with every visit. The sophisticated interactivity extends throughout the site, with each element earning its place by either delighting users or guiding them toward registration.
